State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Materials Technology is currently recruiting for a Pavement Crew Chief (Transportation Engineering Technician V) in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.


Nature of Work: The primary role of this position is to serve as the Pavement Testing Crew Chief within the Field Explorations Division. This position will be responsible for scheduling and collecting statewide field data using a Coring or Drilling Rig and Ground Penetrating Radar/Falling Weight Deflectometer (GPR/FWD) testing vehicle. This data is used for pavement rehabilitation and/or reconstruction designs by the pavement design group. Field testing includes, but is not limited to, GPR/FWD field testing, obtaining, and identifying pavement cores, preparing visual condition survey reports and visually identifying subgrade soil types. This position is also responsible for initial data reduction and performing basic quality checks on the collected data.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective Qualification: Four (4) years of the required experience must have involved field testing, or data collection and testing methods, or testing systems.

*This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or abilities).


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

* Knowledge of the State Highway Network

* Computer skills to manage field data and familiar with excel

* Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) and database analysis

* Experience reading and interpreting highway maps

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.

2. Applicants who possess an associate degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.
Licenses & Certifications

Candidates must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Candidates must complete Traffic Control Training within six (6) months.

Additional Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Candidates will be required to travel overnight and/or extend work hours to complete projects.

* Candidates will be required to work in other geographic areas within the state for extended time.
